The right support

changes everything

Maybe your child is overwhelmed by worries that won’t quiet down. Maybe they’re struggling after a big life change. Maybe you’re seeing anger, withdrawal — and you’re not sure what’s underneath it. Mental health therapy is a powerful, evidence-based support for children who are struggling.

What Mental Health therapy

can help with

Our therapists use a range of evidence-based modalities to help children and families facing challenges such as:
Anxiety

Worries that feel too big, fears that get in the way of school or friendships, separation anxiety, panic, or avoidance. Therapy helps children understand their anxiety and build real tools to manage it.

ADHD

Difficulty focusing, impulsivity, frustration, and the emotional weight of feeling different. Therapy supports the emotional side of ADHD alongside any other interventions your child is receiving.

Emotional regulation and big feelings

Meltdowns, explosive anger, mood swings, or a child who can’t seem to calm down. Therapy builds the emotional coping skills that make daily life smoother for everyone.

ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)

Persistent defiance, arguments, and power struggles that are straining your relationship with your child. Therapy helps break the cycle — for your child, and for your family.

PTSD and trauma

Children who’ve experienced difficult events — abuse, neglect, accidents, violence, or loss — deserve specialized, trauma-informed support. Our therapists are trained to help children process what they’ve been through in a safe, supportive environment.

Life transitions

Divorce, a new sibling, a move, foster care, or adoption. Big changes affect children deeply — and therapy gives them space to process, adjust, and feel secure.

Depression and withdrawal

A child who’s lost interest in things they used to love, seems persistently sad, or is pulling away from family and friends. Therapy helps children reconnect — with themselves and others.

FAQs

What is Child Mental Health Therapy?

What is child mental health therapy, and how is it different from adult therapy?

Child mental health therapy is professional, evidence-based psychological treatment for children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioral, or developmental difficulties. It differs from adult therapy in its methods: therapists working with children adapt their approach to the child’s developmental stage, cognitive level, and preferred way of communicating. For younger children this often means play-based modalities; for older children and teens, more structured, talking approaches. The goal across all ages is to reduce distress, build coping capacity, and improve day-to-day functioning.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Our therapists use a range of evidence-based modalities. For younger children, play and art therapy both provide a developmentally-appropriate medium for emotional expression and processing. For older children and teens, therapeutic work is more talk-based, drawing on cognitive and behavioral frameworks to build coping skills, emotional regulation, and insight. We also offer trauma-informed approaches for children who have experienced adverse events, family therapy sessions, and sibling sessions where family dynamics are part of the clinical picture.

What conditions does child mental health therapy treat?

Therapy is effective for a wide range of presentations including: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias; depression and low mood; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — specifically the emotional and behavioral dimensions; oppositional defiant disorder (ODD); post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma; emotional dysregulation; adjustment difficulties related to life transitions; and grief and loss. A formal diagnosis is not required to start — if your child is struggling, that’s sufficient reason to reach out.
Who is it for?

How do I know if my child needs mental health support?

Indicators worth taking seriously include: persistent anxiety or worry that interferes with daily functioning (school refusal, avoidance, sleep difficulties); persistent low mood, withdrawal, or loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities; explosive anger or emotional outbursts disproportionate to the trigger; significant behavioral change following a life event (divorce, bereavement, a move, new sibling); difficulty forming or maintaining peer relationships; or simply a gut feeling that something isn’t right. You don’t need certainty — reaching out is enough.

My child seems fine at school but is struggling at home. Or vice versa. Does that still count?

Absolutely — context-specific presentations are very common. Children often contain their distress in one environment at the cost of another. A therapist will assess the full picture across settings, not just the most visible symptoms.

Does my child need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. Therapy is appropriate for any child who is struggling, regardless of whether a formal diagnosis has been made.  A diagnosis can be helpful in guiding the clinical approach, but it is not a prerequisite. Kutest Kids does not formally diagnose mental health conditions.
Getting Started

What does the process look like from first contact to first session?

When you first contact us, we’ll have a conversation about your child — what you’re seeing, how long it’s been going on, and what you’re hoping therapy might address. We’ll verify your insurance coverage and then match your child with a therapist based on their age, presenting needs, and clinical fit. We don’t book ongoing sessions until we’re confident we have the right match.

How is the therapist matched to my child?

Matching is done thoughtfully before sessions begin, taking into account your child’s age, diagnosis or presenting concerns, personality, and the clinical experience and therapeutic approach of available therapists. We confirm a therapist can see your child on an ongoing basis before scheduling starts.

What does the first session look like?

The first session is an intake appointment. The therapist will gather a full clinical history — developmental background, current concerns, relevant family context, and your goals for treatment. The second session is typically your child’s first individual therapy session.

Is there intake paperwork?

We’ll ask you to complete consent documentation before therapy begins. We don’t use a lengthy pre-intake questionnaire — instead, we gather clinical history directly in the first session.
Cost & Insurance

Is mental health therapy covered by insurance?

Yes — mental health therapy is covered by most major insurance plans. We’re in-network with most providers and will verify your benefits and authorization requirements before anything begins.

What if I don’t know what my insurance covers?

Give us a call. We’ll check your benefits and give you a clear picture of what’s covered — so you can make an informed decision without navigating it alone.
What sessions look like

What does a therapy session actually look like for my child?

It depends on age and clinical approach. For younger children, sessions use play therapy — structured therapeutic play using art, games, puppets, or sandplay to help children express and process what words can’t yet capture. Our state-of-the-art play therapy rooms are purpose-designed and fully equipped for this. For older children and teens, sessions are more conversational — working through emotions, building cognitive coping tools, and developing insight and self-awareness. All sessions are 1-on-1 with a consistent therapist.

How long is a session?

Sessions are 60 minutes.

Will my child see the same therapist every time?

Yes. The therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in child mental health treatment. We don’t rotate therapists — your child’s therapist gets to know them deeply, tracks their progress carefully, and adjusts the approach as they grow.

Where do sessions take place?

Choose between our Roxborough (7201 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia PA 19128) or Northeast Philadelphia (1917 Welsh Road, Philadelphia PA 19115) locations, both with on-site parking.

Can you come to our home?

Private-pay sessions are available at the location of your choice. Insurance-based sessions are available at one of our clinics.

How long does therapy last?

It varies significantly by presentation. Some children benefit from a focused short-term course of 8–12 sessions around a specific challenge or transition. Others with more complex or chronic presentations require longer-term support. Your child’s therapist will set clear goals, review progress regularly, and always be transparent about where things stand.
For Parents

What’s my role in my child’s therapy?

Your child’s therapist will keep you informed on the themes being worked on and give you practical strategies to reinforce skills between sessions. Family sessions are available when parents and children benefit from working through things together.

Will the therapist share what my child says in sessions?

Your child’s therapist will keep you meaningfully informed on progress, goals, and what to look out for at home. Confidentiality within sessions helps build the trust that makes therapy effective — your therapist will be transparent with you about how they navigate this.

What if my child doesn’t want to come, or says they don’t need help?

Very common, especially with older children and adolescents. Resistance at the start doesn’t predict poor outcomes — our therapists are experienced at engaging children who are sceptical, withdrawn, or reluctant, building rapport gradually.

What if the therapist isn’t the right fit?

Tell us. If it’s not working, we’ll find a better match.
And For You

Parenting a child who’s struggling is hard. Is there any support for parents?

Yes. Beyond family sessions, we can connect you with our social work support and our Parents as Teachers program, which provides free parenting coaching and resources. You don’t have to carry this alone.
