their world.

sensory processing
Sensory processing

Your child is overwhelmed by sounds, textures, lights, or movement — or on the flip side, seems to seek out intense sensory input. OT helps their nervous system find balance.

emotional regulation
Emotional regulation

Big feelings that seem out of proportion, meltdowns they should’ve outgrown, or difficulty calming down once upset. OT gives children real tools to manage their emotions.

fine motor skills
Fine motor skills

Difficulty holding a pencil, buttoning clothes, using scissors, or doing the small, precise movements that school and daily life require.

daily living skills
Daily living skills

Getting dressed, eating neatly, personal hygiene — tasks that should be routine but aren’t. OT builds independence, one step at a time.

attention and focus
Attention and focus

A child who can’t stay on task, seems constantly distracted, or struggles to sit through a lesson or a meal. OT helps regulate the underlying systems that sustain attention.

school readiness and handwriting
School readiness and handwriting

From holding a pencil to sitting at a desk, OT helps children manage the physical and organizational demands of the classroom.

play and social skills
Play and social skills

Some children struggle with the coordination or social back-and-forth that play requires. OT builds the skills that help them join in.

FAQs

What is Occupational Therapy?

What is OT, and why is it called “occupational” therapy?

Occupational therapy gets its name from the word “occupation” — the activities that make up a person’s daily life. For children, those occupations are things like eating, getting dressed, writing, playing, and managing emotions. Pediatric OT addresses the underlying neurological, sensory, and motor systems that allow children to do those things. When those systems aren’t working well, everyday tasks become disproportionately hard, and OT targets the root cause, not just the surface behaviour.

What does OT actually cover clinically?

Pediatric OT addresses sensory processing (including tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive processing), fine motor development, visual-motor integration, self-regulation and emotional regulation, activities of daily living (ADLs), oral motor function and feeding, and school readiness skills including handwriting. It spans a wide range of presentations — from sensory hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity to developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and from feeding aversion to difficulties with executive function.

How is OT different from PT?

PT focuses primarily on gross motor skills — large-body movements like walking, running, balance, and postural control. OT focuses on fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-regulation, and functional independence in daily life. There is some overlap, particularly around sensory integration and motor planning (praxis), and where both are needed we coordinate care in-house.
Getting Started

How do I know if my child needs OT?

Common indicators include: difficulty tolerating certain textures, sounds, or sensory input (tactile or auditory defensiveness); sensory-seeking behaviors like crashing, spinning, or constant movement; difficulty with fine motor tasks like handwriting, using scissors, or fastening buttons; emotional dysregulation and meltdowns disproportionate to the trigger; trouble with self-care routines; and poor attention and concentration You don’t need a formal diagnosis to reach out. Tell us what you’re seeing and we’ll help you figure out whether OT, or another service, makes the most sense.

Does my child need a referral or diagnosis to start?

No referral is needed to contact us. Some insurance plans require a pediatrician’s referral before therapy begins — we’ll check this when we verify your benefits so you know exactly what’s needed upfront.

What happens on the first call?

We’ll ask about your child, what you’re noticing at home and school, and how it’s affecting their daily life. We’ll give you a clear picture of what OT looks like at Kutest Kids and what the next steps are.

How quickly can we get started?

Once insurance is confirmed and an initial assessment is complete, we work to get your child seen as quickly as possible. The sooner support is in place, the sooner things start to shift.

What does the initial assessment involve?

Your child’s occupational therapist will use a combination of standardised assessments and structured clinical observation to evaluate their sensory processing, fine motor skills, visual-motor integration, and functional performance in daily activities. Standardized tools may include assessments of sensory modulation, motor proficiency, and adaptive behavior. You’ll be asked to provide developmental history and describe what a typical day looks like — your observations are a core part of the clinical picture.
Insurance & Cost

Is OT covered by insurance?

Yes — OT is covered by most major insurance plans. We’re in-network with most providers and we’ll check your benefits, explain what’s covered, and handle the process before you start. No surprises, no commitment required upfront.

Is there any free OT for young children?

Children under 3 may qualify for free OT through Pennsylvania’s Early Intervention program — no diagnosis required. In Philadelphia, Early Intervention is also available for children aged 3–5. Give us a call and we’ll help you figure out the right starting point.

What if I’m not sure what my insurance covers?

Leave it with us. Give us a call and we’ll look into it for you — we handle this every day and can usually get you a clear answer quickly.
The Therapy Itself

What does an OT session look like?

Sessions are hands-on, engaging, and often feel like play to your child — even when real work is happening. Your child’s occupational therapist will assess their specific needs and build a plan around them: the sensory challenges, the motor difficulties, the daily routines that aren’t working. Sessions are always 1-on-1 with a consistent therapist who gets to know your child well.

How long is a session?

An OT session is typically 30-45 minutes.

Where do OT sessions take place?

Sessions take place at our Roxborough (7201 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia PA 19128) or Northeast Philadelphia (1917 Welsh Road, Philadelphia PA 19115) locations, both with on-site parking.

Can your OT therapists come to my kid’s school or home?

If you opt for private-pay Occupational Therapy, therapists can come to you. Call us for more details.

How is OT different from just ‘working on behavior’?

OT addresses the underlying systems that drive behavior — sensory processing, nervous system regulation, motor development. When a child melts down over clothing tags or can’t sit still at a desk, it’s rarely a behavior problem. It’s usually a sensory or regulatory one. OT works on the root cause, not just the surface.

How long does OT last?

It depends on your child’s needs and goals. After an initial assessment, your therapist will give you a realistic picture of what progress looks like and over what timeframe. Progress is reviewed regularly and the plan is always adjusted as your child grows.

Will the same therapist work with my child every session?

Yes. Consistency is central to how we work. Your child builds a real relationship with one therapist — someone who knows their triggers, their strengths, and their wins — and that’s where the best progress happens.

My child’s school has flagged concerns. Should I get an independent OT assessment?

Yes, it’s worth it. A school OT assessment focuses on what’s needed in the classroom. A clinical assessment through Kutest Kids looks at the whole child — home, school, and daily life. The two often complement each other, and we’re happy to coordinate with school staff as part of your child’s care.
For Parents

What’s my role as a parent?

Your child’s therapist will keep you fully in the loop — explaining what’s being worked on, why, and what you can do at home to reinforce progress.

What if my child gets upset or refuses during sessions?

This happens, and our therapists are trained for it. Building trust and comfort takes time, especially for sensory-sensitive children. Your therapist will adapt, meet your child where they are, and work at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

What if the therapist isn’t the right fit?

Tell us. We take the therapeutic relationship seriously, if something isn’t working, we’ll find a better match.
Beyond OT

What if my child needs more than OT?

We offer Speech Therapy, PT, and Mental Health services all under one roof. If your child’s OT therapist identifies additional needs, we coordinate everything in-house — so your child gets holistic care, and you don’t have to juggle multiple providers.

My child is under 5. Should I consider Early Intervention?

Children under 5 may qualify for free OT through Early Intervention — no diagnosis needed. Give us a call and we’ll help you figure out whether EI or insurance-based OT is the right starting point.
